We recommend spaying/neutering cats at 6 months of age. In female cats, spaying prevents unwanted litters and heat cycles, reduces the risk of mammary (breast) cancer, prevents uterine infections, and helps reduce inappropriate urine marking. In male cats, neutering reduces the tendency to spray/urine mark, prevents unwanted pregnancies, prevents testicular cancer, and helps reduce roaming behaviour.
Spaying involves removal of the ovaries and uterus. Neutering involves removal of the testicles.
